Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy for Children

On this page (please scroll down to read): • How Does Hypnosis Work for Children? •
                                                  • Uses of Hypnotherapy for Children • ADD / ADHD What is it?

As with adults, hypnosis is a state of focused awareness in which one remains awake and aware. It is usually accompanied by physical and mental relaxation. Relaxation is, however, not necessary, and with children, often does not occur. Children can be active and have their eyes open and still be in a state of hypnosis which allows their subconscious mind to be more open to useful and beneficial suggestions, as well as problem solving.

Hypnosis is a skill that can be learned by children and adults alike in order to achieve their goals.
With both children and adults, full and active participation is required in order for them to go into hypnosis and to use the suggestions given while they are there.  Children are most often eager to learn a new skill in a fun way, especially one that can help them to be more in control of themselves and to cope better with the world around them.

Children are especially good subjects for hypnotherapy because of:

    • their vivid imagination
    • their readiness, eagerness, and need for new learnings
    • their desire to understand and to share in the activities of the world around them
    • their use of pretend and imitation games

All of the above characteristics enable children to accept and to respond to beneficial hypnotic suggestions.

Unfortunately, these same tendencies also allow them to accept and respond to the many suggestions they are given every day, not all of which are beneficial.  Wittingly or unwittingly, by speech or by action, parents, teachers, coaches, and many other significant figures in a child’s life may be giving a child suggestions that do not work to the child’s benefit.

The use of hypnotherapy can correct many of the inadvertent, negative effects of these influences and allow the child to free him or herself of them.

Hypnotherapy can be used in conjunction with other modes of therapy (such as art and play therapy, or verbal psychotherapy) to support the resolution of emotional issues and to encourage and reinforce positive change.

Hypnotherapy can also be very helpful in dealing with specific negative issues such as nail biting, stuttering, bed-wetting, sleep disturbances, etc.

In addition it can be used to promote and improve positive behavioural traits, such as good study habits, concentration, skill practice (e.g., musical instruments, sports) or creative problem solving.

Hypnotherapy can also help children who have, or are thought to have, ADD or ADHD.

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are defined by a set of behaviours that includes difficulty sustaining attention, impulsivity, and in the case of ADHD, hyperactivity.

The incidence of ADD/ADHD has increased by at least 700 percent over the last 10 years and continues to grow. The current treatment of choice is Ritalin, and other forms of amphetamine.  These are being prescribed for increasingly younger children, often as young as 2 or 3.

Hypnosis is a viable alternative to drugs, and has no negative side effects.  In contrast to drug treatment the effects can be permanent, not just a stop-gap measure.

Hypnosis can help with ADD/ADHD by improving specific unwanted behaviours. Hypnosis is proven to be very effective in helping to increase and improve concentration, memory, learning capacity, motivation, confidence and self-esteem.

Hypnosis can also help to heal the root cause of the disorder, through the unconscious mind.  In addition, the child’s energy system can be balanced in hypnosis, helping to alleviate the worst of the hyperactivity and other symptoms.

In addition to hypnosis, or on its own, EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques can be very helpful for both you and your child. Nancy can teach you EFT and coach you to use it with your child. It can be a tool that your child will grow used to and use on their own also.

Hypnotherapy and EFT could be the solution that you and your child have been hoping for!
